Trump is, without a doubt, a war criminal. But it is becoming increasingly clearer that he is a cornered criminal. Even the media headlines are starting to project this reality, even within the US. Messages like this are coming from Hollywood too, from Robert De Niro, who said:
“Nobody voted for new wars. Nobody voted for higher gas prices. Nobody voted for higher grocery prices. Nobody voted for higher rents. Nobody voted for evicting our neighbors. And nobody voted for government thugs to shoot in the streets. (…) I ask you to vote in three ways: First of all, vote with your feet in a non violent No Kings demonstration on March 28.”
This is a huge change. When Trump re-entered the White House, the view that was widely promoted was that he was all-powerful and that, by strengthening the far right everywhere, he could impose his agenda -not only within the US but also in all countries. Now Trump is raging, but he is not getting away with it.
Heroic resistance
How did we get to this change? The first element we must recognize is the heroic resistance of the Palestinians. Time and again, Trump, on the side of Israel's genocidal campaign, tried to expel the Palestinians from Gaza and send them either to Sinai or to Somaliland. He failed. Now, together with Netanyahu, they are spreading the war throughout the region. Last summer, Trump said he ended the war on Iran in 12 days, and now he is bombing Iran again for almost a month. All he is achieving is destabilizing the global economy and the alliances of American imperialism.
In these circumstances, the movement within the United States comes to play a decisive role. Next to Palestine comes Minnesota, which crumpled the racism card on which Trump counted to isolate the resistance of workers and youth. Not only did he not succeed, but he was forced to retreat spectacularly with resignations from his staff. That has led to the rallies on March 28 becoming the most massive ones since the era of the Vietnam anti-war movement.
This message resonates on an international scale. The struggles count, the “sidewalk” is our power, on March 28 people are uniting their voices in Britain, France, Italy…
We embrace this message here too. We have behind us major mobilizations that brought the “all-powerful” government of the “41-percent” to consider it a success when it scores 20-something percent in the polls. The struggles with the slogan “Tembi-Pylos-Palestine, no justice – no peace” brought us here. And we continue demanding “Hands down from Iran – we want jobs and salary raises – not Patriot missiles”.
Mitsotakis is trying in every way to avoid the elections by insisting that he will exhaust the government’s term. This is another issue he is in tight agreement with Trump. One more reason why on March 28 we are marching toghether with the protesters in America, England, and Italy “voting with our feet”. To bring about the overthrow from below.
